Cultural Community Rallies in Opposition to Governor’s Proposed 40% Cut to NYSCA – Here’s What You Can Do

In a campaign dubbed “Save the Arts in My Community, NYS ARTS and MANY are asking all types of cultural institutions, including museums and heritage organizations, across the state to show to their communities what a 40% reduction in operations would look like if the legislature approves the governor’s proposed cut to the New York State Council on the Arts. Between May 20th and when the budget is passed, cultural organizations will be:

  • darkening 40% of exhibition spaces, covering 40% of work in galleries, turning 40% of objects to the wall or leaving 40% of the gallery empty
  • drawing or taping a 60-40 line on a gallery or public meeting space floor to show what will not be funded
  • making program announcements asking audiences to complete postcards that the museum will mail to appropriate legislators in Albany (download postcard templates here)
  • leaving 40% of a printed program blank or stopping a program with about 40% of it left to note that the remainder wouldn’t be available if NYSCA funding is cut by 40%
  • turning off 40% of the lights
