Session: Engaging Communities in Civic Learning through Museums and Historic SitesMonday, April 711 AM - 12:15 PM Location: Ithaca Downtown Conference Center About: This session will explore practical applications of the Educating for American Democracy (EAD) Roadmap for K-12 civic learning through a collaborative case study involving the Intrepid Museum’s Exploring Civics toolkit and the New Jersey State House Tour Program. This session introduces an adaptable framework that connects students to their communities via historical narratives and civic themes, fostering pride and civic engagement. Using the toolkit developed by the Intrepid Museum, presenters will share methods and activities that encourage students to explore civic roles, create positive change, and appreciate the diversity within the American community.Presenters: Gerrie Hall, Director, Lifelong Learning, Intrepid Museum Gerrie Bay Hall, MA, has worked in the museum education field for over 20 years, the last 15 of which have been at the Intrepid Museum. She is an active member of the wider museum field, serving as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Museum Education, presents work regularly at conferences, and is Adjunct Faculty at Seton Hall University in the Museum Professions Graduate program.Matt Murphy, Tour Program Educator, New Jersey State House Tour Program, New Jersey State Legislature Matt Murphy is an experienced educator specializing in museum interpretation and program development, with a proven background in visitor engagement, facilitative dialogue, DEAI initiatives, and team management at prominent historic sites, including Eastern State Penitentiary and Alcatraz Island. Currently, he is the Tour Program Educator at the New Jersey State House. |
Conference Cancellation Policy
If for any reason, MANY cancels the conference, we will issue you a full refund.
If you cancel your registration before Monday March 31, that request must be made in writing via email to conference@nysmuseums.org. We will refund you the full amount of your registration, minus a $45 administrative fee.
Refunds requested after March 31 will not be granted, including requests made based on absence due to illness, late arrival and/or weather conditions. No refunds will be issued on special event tickets at any point due to restaurants and caterers requiring payment in advance.
Special event ticket purchases are non-refundable; restaurants and caterers require payment in advance. you are welcome to give or sell them to a colleague attending the conference. Please notify MANY staff in advance of the conference regarding any transfer of special event tickets.Please see your hotel confirmation email for your individual hotel reservation cancellation policy.
Video/Photography Policy
By registering for and attending our Annual Conference "Cultivating Community: Looking In, Reaching Out" you grant the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and its authorized representatives permission to film, photograph, or otherwise record your participation in the conference and associated special events.
You further agree that such images, photographs, and recordings may be used by MANY without your prior approval in any form and for any lawful purpose including, without limitation, promoting MANY. Such use will not entitle you to any credit or compensation.
You release MANY, its officers, and employees from any liability connected with the use of any image, photograph, or recording taken during MANY's Annual Conference and associated special events.
Conference Code of Conduct
