Session: Historically Accurate Heritage Tourism: Utilizing data and collaborative programming across multiple sites to introduce new audiences to the Underground Railroad

About: 

The Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS) has championed Abolition Historians for nearly a decade. URCNYS’ digital marketing platforms give a collective voice to its 35+ partner sites and drive advocacy for the preservation and promotion of local history across New York.

Learn about URCNYS’ collaborative programs that connect heritage sites to new audiences. The “Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway” (550 Mile proposed scenic byway),“Freedom 2027” (New York’s Bicentennial Commemoration of Emancipation) and other initiatives, encourage meaningful partnerships with external organizations and agencies to positively impact culturally sustainable tourism and economic development.

Presenters:

Sage Hamilton-Hazarika, Corridor Coordinator, Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State

Sage Hamilton Hazarika currently serves as Corridor Coordinator for the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS). A marketing strategist with nine years experience in the travel and tourism industry, Sage’s work in events and experiential marketing helped define his understanding of how the public’s experience with destination marketing brands can influence their travel practices. Sage holds a BA in Marketing from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Saladin Allah, Director of Community Engagement, Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center

Saladin Allah is an Educator, Author, Award-Winning Producer, and the third-great grandson of famed underground railroad Freedom Seeker Josiah Henson. Saladin is currently Director of Community Engagement at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, Public Projects Coordinator at the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, a member of the United Nations International Civil Society Working Group for the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, and Founding Director of the Atlantis School For Gifted Youngsters.

Jaqueline Madison, President, North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association

Jacqueline Madison is the President of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association which oversees the North Star Underground Railroad Museum. Jackie is also the President of the Women’s Rights Alliance of New York State. She is on the Advisory Board for Adirondack Architectural Heritage, a nonprofit historic organization for New York State’s Adirondack region and the Community Advisory Board for Mountain Lake PBS.

Talima Aaron, President, Board of Trustees, John W. Jones Museum

Since joining the John W. Jones Board of Trustees’ finance committee in 2004, Talima Aaron advanced the museum’s restoration, preservation and education efforts. Her grant writing efforts on these objectives have raised significant funding for restoring and stabilizing the building. From 2008 to 2016 she served as second vice president, and she has been serving as president of the board since 2016. Under her leadership, the Museum opened its doors to the public in 2016.

Conference Cancellation Policy

If for any reason, MANY cancels the conference, we will issue you a full refund. 

If you cancel your registration before Monday March 31, that request must be made in writing via email to conference@nysmuseums.org. We will refund you the full amount of your registration, minus a $45 administrative fee. 

Refunds requested after March 31 will not be granted, including requests made based on absence due to illness, late arrival and/or weather conditions. No refunds will be issued on special event tickets at any point due to restaurants and caterers requiring payment in advance.

Special event ticket purchases are non-refundable; restaurants and caterers require payment in advance. you are welcome to give or sell them to a colleague attending the conference. Please notify MANY staff in advance of the conference regarding any transfer of special event tickets.

Video/Photography Policy

By registering for and attending our Annual Conference "Cultivating Community: Looking In, Reaching Out" you grant the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and its authorized representatives permission to film, photograph, or otherwise record your participation in the conference and associated special events.


You further agree that such images, photographs, and recordings may be used by MANY without your prior approval in any form and for any lawful purpose including, without limitation, promoting MANY. Such use will not entitle you to any credit or compensation.


You release MANY, its officers, and employees from any liability connected with the use of any image, photograph, or recording taken during MANY's Annual Conference and associated special events.

Conference Code of Conduct
