Virtual Tour and Discussion

Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site: Exploring Multiple Perspectives

Heidi Hill, Executive Director, Schuyler Mansion and Fort Crailo State Historic Sites

How might a historic house museum tell a more complete story? Join us at Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, where unique approaches have been in practice since 2000 to help bring more voices to the history we share. We will begin at the 1917 Visitor Center, where the 2017 exhibit installation offers a chance to re-envision the past with a model of the mansion, grounds and outbuildings, inclusive exhibit text, and visits with six different individuals who lived at, worked at or visited the Schuyler’s home in the 18th century. Hear about four additional individuals to be added to this feature soon.

In and around the mansion, a discussion on previously unexplored spaces, inclusion of the stories of people who have been left out of the narrative, as well as Schuyler’s involvement in activities that provide a more balanced view of the Major General are illuminated. You will hear about a new focus tour on the lives and experiences of the enslaved men, women and children of Schuyler Mansion, contributing to the multiple perspectives’ narrative of the Capital District Region.
