ATTRACTIVE NUISANCES*

In his daily briefings and in written guidance for re-opening our state safely for all New Yorkers, Governor Cuomo designated museums as "attractive nuisances." We are so attractive that people just won't be able to stay away if we open our doors! As such, museums will not be able to reopen and serve their communities and visitors until a region safely reaches Phase 4 in the reopening guidelines. NYS museums are proud to contribute $5.37B to New York State's economy, support over 61,000 jobs, and help bring in 253 million visitors each year. Support MANY as we support our museums during this difficult time, and be proud to be an attractive nuisance.

*Attractive Nuisance is a doctrine in tort law under which a landowner may be liable for injuries to children who trespass on land if the injury results from a hazardous object or condition on the land that is likely to attract children who are unable to appreciate the risk posed by the object or condition.—Cornell Law School
