Happy Summer and welcome to This Month in NYS Museums,
With our newsletter re-design and the launch of the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibition in our state, this issue gives MANY tons of water to celebrate. My father’s mother lived across the street from the New York Aquarium. From her terrace, I watched the Beluga Whale swim around and around and around in its tank. The Aquarium has changed a lot in the past 50 years, but perhaps no more so than with its most recent renovation. The article Shark Appeal showcases their newest exhibitions that have increased the number of visitors and Instagram followers. The new exhibitions are a great reason to hop the F train to Coney Island this summer for a visit to the aquarium, the board walk, and the beach. For more great ideas about New York’s Water, check out the article on the Erie Canalway National Heritage Area’s new impact grants which double the amount of funding available for partnerships and interpretive programs that bring people to the Canal and out on the water. For our first video article, Megan Eves attended the opening of the exhibition Through Our Eyes at the Hudson River Museum and interviewed Kress fellow and curator Christian Stegall.
