Preservation Plans: A Writing Workshop
Pre-conference Workshop

Location: New York State Museum Student Center

Time: 1 - 5 PM

About: A preservation plan is an essential document that helps collecting institutions thoughtfully and carefully chart a course for the preservation of their collections. In this 4-hour workshop, participants will learn about the components that go into an effective preservation plan, methods for prioritizing preservation needs, and how to use a preservation plan as a tool for advocacy. Time will be given to individual reflection and writing of institution-specific goals, as well as group feedback and discussion. Participants will leave with a framework for their own preservation plan in place as well as an understanding of how to build objectives and strategies for completion.

Presenters:

Amanda Murray, DHPSNY Program Manager, Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York

As the Program Manager for DHPSNY, Amanda oversees all aspects of the program, including educational programming, communications, outreach, and planning and assessment services. Prior to joining DHPSNY, Amanda was the Visual Materials Cataloger for the Department of Rare and Manuscript Collections and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University. Amanda holds an MA in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from the University of Rochester and an MLS from the University at Buffalo.

Kate Jacus, DHPSNY Preservation Specialist, Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York

Kate Jacus is DHPSNY’s Preservation Specialist, providing preservation and assessment services and other educational programming for institutions across NYS. She previously worked at several museums, including as Collections Manager at Strong National Museum of Play. Kate founded The Photo Curator, a collections management service for families. She lives in Rochester and has an MS in Museum Studies from the University of Colorado - Boulder and an MBA from RIT.

    What to expect:

    Participants will learn what elements are needed for an effective preservation plan and how to build those components for their own organization. Participants will also leave with some initial objectives and strategies drafted and an action plan for completing their preservation plan.

    Pre-Conference Workshop Cancellation Policy

    If for any reason, MANY cancels a pre-conference workshop, we will issue you a full refund. 


    If you cancel your registration before April 1, that request must be made in writing via email to conference@nysmuseums.org. We will refund you the full amount of your registration, minus a $15 administrative fee. 


    Refunds requested after April 1 will not be granted, including requests made based on absence due to illness, late arrival and/or weather conditions. No refunds will be issued on special event tickets at any point due to restaurants and caterers requiring payment in advance; you are welcome to give or sell them to a colleague attending the conference.
