The Northern Slavery Collective: How Museums and Historic Sites are Joining Forces to Collaborate on Interpreting the History of Enslavement Friday, September 22, 2023 12 - 1:30 PM EST The Northern Slavery Collective (NorSC) is a group of museum professionals and academics dedicated to researching and interpreting the history of enslaved people and the practice of enslavement in the Northern United States. A panel of professionals will discuss the challenges that member institutions faced in their journey to create a more inclusive narrative and how they have worked creatively to overcome them. The panel will begin with a brief introduction to NorSC and each panelist’s institutions and then move into a question and answer session.

Meredith Sorin Horsford, Executive Director, Historic House Trust and Immediate Past Executive Director of the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum Alliance overseeing the preservation of the 1784 historic structure. Previously, she served as the Executive Director of the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, the Deputy Director and Director of Property Stewardship & Acquisitions at the Historic House Trust of NYC. Meredith holds a MA from the University of Delaware, a BA from SUNY College at Geneseo, and a certificate in Grantmaking and Foundations from New York University. |
Donnamarie Barnes has spent over thirty years working in the editorial photography field as a Photo Editor for publications such as People Magazine and Essence and as a Photo Librarian and Editor at the Gamma Liaison photo agency. A life-long summer and full-time resident of Sag Harbor, she curated a highly-acclaimed historic tintype photography exhibition in 2015 at the Eastville Community Historical Society. Donnamarie came to Sylvester Manor in 2014 as a volunteer and history docent and is now working to archive the various collections within the Manor house, as well as lead tours for individuals and groups. | Peter Bunten is Executive Director of the Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project. He is the current Vice President of the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State and serves as a Trustee of the Dutchess County Historical Society. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the Northern Slavery Collective.Prior to retirement, Mr. Bunten was the Education Manager for Historic Hudson Valley. He has a Master’s degree in Historical Studies from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. | Heather Lodge is the Associate Director Youth and Family Programs at the Greenwich Historical Society and longtime partner of the Witness Stones Project, a non-profit that works to uncover and honor the contributions of enslaved individuals in CT. She heads the research, outreach, and creation of slavery related programming at the Greenwich Historical Society. Heather has BA in History and Education, and a MLitt in Ethnology and Folklore from the University of Aberdeen. |
