Pre-conference Workshop: Collective Wisdom: Collaborative Learning to Support Your Community Archiving ProjectsLocation: Ithaca Marriott Downtown Time: 1 - 4 PM
This workshop will invite attendees to engage in collaborative learning through the exploration of opportunities and challenges commonly encountered in community archiving projects. Participants will gain inspiration and insight from learning about other community archiving projects happening at cultural heritage organizations and will learn strategies and tools for guiding community collaborations toward successful outcomes. A featured case study will be a multi-faceted Queens Memory collaboration with graduate Public History classes and the local residents who make up the Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground Conservancy, to document and preserve a previously neglected historic burial ground. What to expect: 1. An opportunity to connect and discuss "community archiving" with one another, including exploring various angles on what this can mean and look like. 2. An example of a successful community archiving project and an understanding of the investments and commitments in time and relationship building that this work can require. 3. An introduction to a tool that can support certain types of community archiving projects –highlighting the Oral History Association's Metadata Assessment and Planning Toolkit. Presenters: Kate Philipson, Archives Specialist, Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York (DHPSNY) As the Archives Specialist for the DHPSNY program, Kate Philipson conducts Archival Needs Assessments and assists with archival and preservation planning. She also develops and presents educational programs and provides technical information to library, archival, and museum repositories throughout New York State. She serves as a board member for the New York Archives Conference (NYAC), and has worked with community archives in NY, Chicago, and in Puerto Rico with the NYU Audiovisual Preservation Exchange (APEX) program.Natalie Milbrodt, University Archivist, City University of New York (CUNY) As the University Archivist for the City University of New York (CUNY), Natalie Milbrodt’s responsibilities include coordination and planning for archival preservation and records management across the university’s 25 campuses. She serves on the Oral History Association’s Metadata Task Force and as an advisory board member for the New York State Archives. |
Pre-Conference Workshop Cancellation Policy
If for any reason, MANY cancels a pre-conference workshop, we will issue you a full refund.
If you cancel your registration before March 31, that request must be made in writing via email to conference@nysmuseums.org. We will refund you the full amount of your registration, minus a $15 administrative fee.
Refunds requested after March 31 will not be granted, including requests made based on absence due to illness, late arrival and/or weather conditions. No refunds will be issued on special event tickets at any point due to restaurants and caterers requiring payment in advance; you are welcome to give or sell them to a colleague attending the conference.

By registering for and attending our Annual Conference "Cultivating Community: Looking In, Reaching Out" you grant the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and its authorized representatives permission to film, photograph, or otherwise record your participation in the conference and associated special events.
You further agree that such images, photographs, and recordings may be used by MANY without your prior approval in any form and for any lawful purpose including, without limitation, promoting MANY. Such use will not entitle you to any credit or compensation.
You release MANY, its officers, and employees from any liability connected with the use of any image, photograph, or recording taken during MANY's Annual Conference and associated special events.
