Dear MANY Members and Members of our Museum Community,
Happy Halloween and welcome to the October edition of This Month in NYS Museums.
In this edition, we continue our series on how museums improve their visitor experience through capital improvements with an article about all the changes at Rochester's Eastman Museum and how the museum carefully planned and secured funding for each stage of construction. On Monday, November 4 we will be announcing the scholarships for the 2020 Annual Conference "The Power of Partnership" that will be held in Albany, March 29-31. I hope Meredith Horsford's article about how being the recipient of the Cassetti Scholarship helped advance her career will inspire nominations. Our second article that explores the intersection of museum and science work by Kate Jacus of Archival Method was a true revelation and I hope will raise awareness among those who work with collections about new archival standards. My letter this month is an expression of gratitude to all who have joined us at our events this fall. We are deep in 2020 conference planning with Long Island and the Hudson Valley to look forward to before we pack up our travel kit for the winter.

How the Eastman Museum is Changing Their Visitor Experience

Within the last few months, the Eastman Museum has received two National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants and two Institute for Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grants with a combined total of $1.3 million dollars. The Museum also received $1 million from the New York State Council on the Arts in 2018. These public funds will help implement facilities improvement projects that will create a new accessible main entrance and welcome center as well as restoration work on the historic mansion and gardens...READ MORE

What is “Archival?”: Decoding ISO 18902
If you work or volunteer at a museum, library, or historical society, doubtless you know that objects should be displayed and stored in archival-quality materials. “Acid-free,” “lignin-free,” and “photo safe” are terms that get thrown around a lot. What do they really mean? There is more to a material being photo safe than its pH and lignin content. Understanding the science of what makes something archival will help you make more informed decisions about the materials you use to protect your institutions’ cultural heritage. READ MORE

Urban Archive Web App Release
Urban Archive, the technology nonprofit that creates new connections between people, places, and historical institutions, today announced the release of its first web app, making its popular geospatial application available to anyone with an internet connection for the first time. Since launching an iOS app in 2016, Urban Archive has merged open city data with the digital collections of dozens of museums, libraries, and city agencies, making it easier than ever for the public to explore New York’s changing urban environment in a single place. The FindNYCulture.org Project
Findnyculture.org is a new resource developed by the New York State Education Department's Office of Cultural Education to connect teachers to New York's cultural education community. Participating organizations can promote programs, resources, and events for free. The project will also be the most comprehensive list of New York State's cultural organizations, providing opportunities for networking, research, disaster preparedness, and more. READ MORE
